Adaptive Obstacle Course (2017)

Project: Temporary Installation, Public Streets
Status: Built
Team: The Movement Creative
Role: Design, Installation, Programming
Cost: $3,100
Location: Foley Square, NYC
Date: August 2016
Clients: NYC Department of Transportation, Brooklyn Boulders Foundation, Adaptive Climbing Group

Can we create an obstacle course where an adult with the full command of their body can run alongside a participant in a wheelchair or with a prosthetic... and both be able to have a physically challenging and engaging experience?

In collaboration with ACG, the Adaptive Climbing Course is an all-ages, all-abilities, wheel-chair accessible 'pop-up' obstacle course.  Each element in the course is designed to be easily modified for the user if necessary, with safety and rigging systems designed into many of the more complex obstacles.

The challenge wasn't just about creating an accessible play space, but an inclusive one as well. Accessible play experiences enable individuals in wheelchairs to use the equipment and maneuver safely. Inclusive play experiences go beyond and provide opportunities for individuals of all abilities to interact and play together.
